About the resource

The Emma Lazarus Project explores the story of Emma Lazarus, a fifth-generation American Jew who wrote the poem,“The New Colossus,” that is engraved at the base of the Statue of Liberty. The initiative—including an exhibit, curriculum and poetry contest—uses primary sources to encourage students to piece together Lazarus’s story and to join the ongoing conversation about American identity.
