You know their names—but do you know how Jewish heritage and lived experiences informed two of the most influential and enduring legal careers in U.S. Supreme Court history?

Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish justice on the Supreme Court, championed fairness, privacy, and the public good. Through the concept of “living law,” Brandeis pushed for U.S. legal interpretation to evolve to meet the changing social and economic needs of society rather than remaining stuck in centuries-old, static precedents.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG), who faced barriers as both an American woman and a Jewish one, used a deliberate legal strategy to transform how the courts understood gender discrimination and to dismantle gender-based inequities in U.S. law. For both justices, their careers reflect values that are core to Jewish heritage and resonate across traditions: the pursuit of justice, the importance of principled debate, and the responsibility to improve society so that every person is treated with dignity, from generation to generation.
