It follows the Cuheno family, diamond merchants, who pass down a magnificent 60-carat heirloom diamond and the name "Rachel" to the firstborn daughter of every generation. The diamond and the name tie together a sprawling saga of women who risk everything for love and honor as they endure the Spanish Inquisition, the pogroms of Eastern Europe, and the Holocaust.
